Bach’s Cantata 4—“Christ lag in Todesbanden” (Christ lay in bonds of death)—reminds us of Jesus’ victory over death and his promise of new life given to all. The Elm Ensemble leads a service of evening prayer that includes performances of Cantata 4 on Baroque instruments and Bobby McFerrin’s The Twenty-Third Psalm. Free and open to the public. Josh Messner is founding director of the Elm Ensemble. He studied music and theology at Valparaiso University and Islamic Studies at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul. In his youth, he was a member of the American Boychoir. Josh served in publishing and marketing roles at Augsburg Fortress Publishers and in communications roles for the University of Minnesota and the University of Michigan, most recently at the U-M School of Public Health and Center for Global Health Equity. He currently serves as communications manager at Luther Seminary.
